How does a story enter the wire tray?
A story enters when a section editor assigns a lane, names primary sources and sets a verification deadline. Tips by email are logged with timestamp and assigned to the same ladder — no separate queue, no preferential lane. Anonymous tips are reviewed but rarely published without corroboration.
What does verification look like in practice?
Verification means contacting the originating agency or named spokesperson, reading the primary document and comparing against prior filings. Two editors sign off before publication. If a source declines to comment, the dispatch states that explicitly rather than implying confirmation.
How are corrections handled?
Corrections appear at the top of the affected dispatch with a mono dateline, a description of the error and the corrected text. We do not silently edit published files. Major corrections receive a standalone note in the morning wire the following day.
How does the desk treat anonymous sources?
Anonymous sources are used sparingly and only when the information is vital to public understanding and cannot be obtained on the record. The desk editor must approve anonymity in writing, and the dispatch explains why anonymity was granted without revealing identity.
How do embargoes work on this desk?
Embargoed material is held in a time-locked file until the stated release moment. Editors may prepare text in advance but cannot publish early. If an embargo lifts during a closed shift, weekend watch may publish after verification.
How is APAC context added without sensational framing?
Regional context is drawn from verified filings in neighbouring markets and attributed clearly. We compare mechanisms, not personalities. When Singapore policy diverges from regional norms, the context note explains the institutional reason rather than speculating on motive.
How are reader tips reviewed?
Tips sent to [email protected] are read by the desk editor on duty and logged with receipt time. We reply when a tip leads to verification work; we do not acknowledge tips that cannot be pursued. Include documents, links and contact details where possible.
What is the byline policy?
Dispatches carry the initials of the verifying editor and the lane label. Feature-length context notes may carry a full byline when one writer drafted and one editor verified. Wire items remain unsigned beyond initials to emphasise desk accountability.
How does the desk handle conflicting official statements?
When two agencies disagree, we publish both statements with datelines and note the conflict plainly. We do not adjudicate which agency is correct; we describe the disagreement and any scheduled clarification hearings or filings that may resolve it.
What happens when a primary document is retracted?
If an agency retracts a filing, we publish a correction dispatch and archive the original with a strikethrough note in the correction log. Readers following via morning wire receive the retraction in the next update rather than discovering it through silent edits.
