Pulse formats

Desk note · Dispatch formats · Six formats structure our publishing day. They are named for rhythm, not revenue. The red rail beside each entry marks the format code used in internal logs.

Morning wire lands before oh-seven-hundred. Midday update amends without rewriting. Context note supplies history. Desk summary hands shifts. Regional brief compresses APAC. Weekend file catches Saturday releases.

Formats are not tiers — no reader pays differently for any of them. Names describe length and purpose only. We forbid monetary framing on public pages.

The red rail is a signature section: vertical hairline, square markers, mono codes. It replaces the banned card grid with something you could sketch on a proof margin.

Two photographs — monitor glow and story notes — show the desk between formats. Editors switch formats more often than they switch chairs.

Context: Choosing the wrong format wastes reader time. A context note when a wire item would suffice buries the lead; a wire item when context is required misleads. Section editors pick format at assignment, verifying editors confirm at sign-off.

Robinson Road night desk · morning wire timing: Morning wire lands before oh-seven-hundred with instrument numbers in the lead.

Robinson Road night desk · midday update addendum rules: Midday updates amend prior dispatches without rewriting the original file silently.

Robinson Road night desk · context note length cap: Context notes supply history when a wire item alone would mislead repeat readers.

Robinson Road night desk · desk summary handover: Desk summaries are mandatory at every shift end before the next editor sits down.

Robinson Road night desk · regional brief compression: Regional briefs compress APAC into one dispatch without erasing national nuance.

Robinson Road night desk · weekend file Saturday scope: Weekend file catches Saturday agency releases on a reduced roster.

Robinson Road night desk · emerald rail format codes: The emerald rail marks format codes used in internal logs beside each dispatch type.

Robinson Road night desk · format versus urgency distinction: Format names describe length and purpose, not urgency tiers or paid access levels.

Robinson Road night desk · internal log markers: Internal logs use mono codes matching the emerald rail on the Pulses page.

Robinson Road night desk · reader scan time targets: Wire items target under two minutes scan time for experienced readers.

Robinson Road night desk · morning wire timing: Wire items stay under four hundred words unless a statutory filing requires more.

Robinson Road night desk · midday update addendum rules: Addenda carry a mono timestamp and reference the morning wire dateline they amend.

Robinson Road night desk · context note length cap: Length cap keeps context notes under six hundred words unless embargo docs require more.

Robinson Road night desk · desk summary handover: Summaries list open threads, pending embargoes and outstanding correction requests.

Robinson Road night desk · regional brief compression: Singapore filings lead; regional items follow in separate labelled paragraphs.

Robinson Road night desk · weekend file Saturday scope: Saturday scope excludes rewrites of weekday dispatches unless agencies amend filings.

Robinson Road night desk · emerald rail format codes: Vertical hairline and square markers replace card grids on the Pulses page.

Robinson Road night desk · format versus urgency distinction: Urgent filings still pass verification — speed never skips the ladder.

Robinson Road night desk · internal log markers: Markers include shift initials, lane number and format code on every filed item.

Robinson Road night desk · reader scan time targets: Context notes allow longer reading when history is necessary for understanding.

Robinson Road night desk · morning wire timing: Early read shift signs the first wire; verifying editor confirms quotes before release.

Robinson Road night desk · midday update addendum rules: Section editors draft addenda; verifying editors confirm the changed passage only.

Robinson Road night desk · context note length cap: Context notes never lead with commentary — primary document summary comes first.

Robinson Road night desk · desk summary handover: Missing handover summaries are treated as incomplete shifts in the internal log.

Robinson Road night desk · regional brief compression: Briefs name which regional desks were consulted when corroboration occurred.

Robinson Road night desk · weekend file Saturday scope: Weekend watch signs with initials and posts correction log access for Monday handover.

Morning wire

Filed before 07:00 SGT, the morning wire summarises overnight developments across all six lanes in a single scroll-friendly dispatch. Each item carries a mono dateline, a one-sentence lead and a link to the primary source where available. The format exists for readers who open their inbox before the city fully wakes.

Midday update

When a verified story breaks after the morning wire, the midday update adds a structured addendum rather than rewriting the entire file. The desk marks what changed, what remains unconfirmed and which editor signed the revision. Readers who rely on the morning wire can scan the update in under two minutes.

CN

Context note

Longer than a wire item but shorter than a desk summary, the context note explains background that newcomers need — legislative history, prior agency positions, regional comparisons. It is the format we use when the headline alone would mislead without two paragraphs of framing.

DS

Desk summary

At shift change, the outgoing editor files a desk summary: open threads, pending verification, embargoes in force and corrections issued that day. Internal in tone but published for transparency, it shows how the night desk hands work to the morning read without losing thread.

RB

Regional brief

The regional brief compresses APAC business and policy items into a single lane-indexed dispatch for readers who follow Singapore as a hub rather than every market separately. Sources are named; anonymous material is never included in this format.

WF

Weekend file

Filed Saturday morning, the weekend file catches items that matured after Friday's evening shift — agency releases timed for the weekend, cultural programmes opening Sunday, infrastructure works beginning Monday. It is shorter than the weekly rhythm document on the Shifts page but serves the same archival purpose.
